Jane started her musical training at the piano as a child, she also sang from an early age. As a teenager she played the flute in youth groups, and then went on to study music at York University where she graduated as a first study singer. Later she took a masters degree in singing at Reading University, and later still trained as a classroom music teacher.
As a singer, she began performing in public very early, including singing Mabel in the Pirates of Penzance when she was still at school. Since then she has sung most of the G&S soprano parts and a fair number of the mezzo parts as well as Dorcas (Haddon Hall) and Heart's Delight (The Rose of Persia). She has sung Mabel, Edith and Ruth in different productions of the Pirates of Penzance as well as musically directing the opera and playing the flute in further productions. She met her husband whilst singing the role of Rose Maybud (Ruddigore) for the Young Savoyards.
Whilst living within easy reach of London, Jane was able to sing with a number of the semi-professional groups in the south east, and performed roles such as Sextus (Clemenza di Tito), Nicklausse (Tales of Hoffmann), Second Lady (The Magic Flute) Arsena (the Gypsy Baron) as well as singing many others in operatic extracts in concerts and a host of comprimario roles. She believes she has performed the entire roles of Carmen, The Countess and Susanna on stage, but not in a single performance. She was also a regular soloist with choirs and choral societies.
Jane moved to Paignton in 2009, and sang with New Devon Opera for three seasons, covering the part of Frasquita (Carmen) in 2011 and singing The Aunt (Madame Butterfly) in 2012. She has also appeared as a soloist with many local societies and choirs, including being the soprano soloist in Creation for Shaldon Choral Society. She has twice given recitals at the Teignmouth Classical Music Festival, and has also taken a programme of wartime songs out to a number of venues in south Devon. She sang Julia Jellicoe for the Torbay Gilbert and Sullivan Society's production of "The Grand Duke" in July 2015 and Ruth for their "Pirates of Penzance" in 2016..
As a musical director, Jane has run several choirs and conducted numerous shows and operettas. In Devon, she directs Red Earth Opera (she directed and sang Dido in their inaugural performance), Cantilena (Broadclyst) and New Century Singers (Bovey Tracey). In the past Jane has also worked with Quay Harmony (Brixham), the Torbay Jubilee Choir, Chudleigh Community Choir and with South Devon Singers and others, directing concerts, running workshops and singing as a soloist for them.
She continues to play the flute, mostly in concert wind bands and in pit orchestras, and has also added the saxophone to her list of instruments. She is also improving her clarinet playing. She has played and sung in party bands, a Pink Floyd tribute band, a folk duo and other assorted ensembles.
